Below are some aerial photographs of Dover kindly donated by James Rowson of www.jameshovercraft.co.uk. They show the town from three different angles showing how it has developed in the River Dour valley and surrounding valleys that join the main valley. The Dour's source is in Alkham Valley to the Northeast of town although the river does not flow the entire length of the valley no more and sometimes reappears in times of flooding and increased rainfall.

Here you can see the valley leading to the Harbour.
The valley was formed by the Dour and the word
Dour means "The Waters". The town's name was
derived from this.

Here we can see where the mouth of the Dour once entered the sea. Although today it reaches the sea via the marina. The National harbour as it is known was built before World War 1 as a means of defence.
